It’s Thursday and time for our Global Activism series. Each Thursday we hear about an individual who’s decided to work to make the world a better place.

Eve Bratman is a doctoral candidate at American University and a co-founder of Sementes e Artesanato de Recursos Florestais da Amazônia (SAFRA). Dara Hoppe is also a co-founder of SAFRA.

Their organization has worked with women living in the Brazilian state of Para to start a jewelry collective. Women use the Amazon’s resources in a sustainable manner to make the jewelry.  They then sell the jewelry and gain more financial independence.

Eve Bratman told Jerome what the area they worked in is like.

It is inspiring to hear how the dreams of a few dedicated people and the intelligence and energies of college students can bring hope and a livelihood to many! 100 Projects for Peace, which provided the start-up funds for SAFRA, will fund 100 more initiatives this coming summer.
